Liberty: Incorporating Four Essays on Liberty
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 2002)
Authors: Isaiah Berlin, Henry Hardy, and Ian Harris
Average review score:

Champion of Liberty
Berlin's essays provide some of the most original arguments for the priority of individual liberty, and particularly so-called negative rights, those that give us the right to be left alone. His writing is at once lucid and colorful. An essential volume for those interested in freedom.

"Loving Men. Gay Partners, Spirituality, and AIDS
Published in Paperback by Continuum Pub Group (October, 1998)
Author: Richard P. Hardy
Average review score:

This book is a convincing argument for gay spirituality.
Richard Hardy's LOVING MEN, GAY PARTNERS, SPIRITUALITY, AND AIDS is a thoroughly convincing argument for the strength of gay spirituality. Based on extensive interviews with gay men caring for partners who are HIV+, the book demonstrates that gay relationships can foster a deep spirituality marked by love, commitment, and self-sacrifice. In a culture in which churches often deny that such spirituality exists in gay relationships, the book's message is one that needs to be heard. Hardy (who has himself provided long-term care for a partner who died of AIDS) concludes that the spirituality fostered by many gay relationships is one that deserves attention in mainstream churches, since it has the hallmarks of holiness, as defined in traditional understandings of spirituality.

The Mayor of Casterbridge: An Authoritative Text, Backgrounds Criticism (A Norton Critical Edition)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (July, 1978)
Authors: Thomas Hardy and James K. Robinson
Average review score:

A classic read
A question about the source of human tragedy lies at the heart of The Mayor of Casterbridge. Characters frequently mention fate and providence as causes for tragedy (and joy), but Hardy offers more subtle and complex explanations for individual tragedy. At times, Hardy seems to indicate that circumstance and timing play a more important role than Providence in shaping the course of human destiny. Can people survive without the aid of luck or providence by pure force of will? Henchard (the Mayor) is a man whose loneliness, egoism, and pride cause him to make bad decisions. His faulty judgement certainly do not help him in his quest for fulfillment, either. Hardy's depiction of an ultimately unknowable universe is achieved partly through his characters' false assignment of meaning to meaningless incidents. Fate, human will, and faulty perceptions are central issues in much of Hardy's writing. Though not as moving and intense as Hardy's masterpiece Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor is not to be missed. Hardy's complex rendering of Henchard's multi-faceted personality is remarkable. In addition, The Norton Critical Addition provides excellent commentary and background information from noteworthy critics.

Mercury-Free: The Wisdom Behind the Global Consumer Movement to Ban "Silver" Dental Fillings
Published in Library Binding by Gabriel Rose Pr Inc (September, 1996)
Authors: James Earl Hardy, Kim Stanberry, and Mickey Gill
Average review score:

A must-read for everyone!
Information that EVERYONE should read! After being diagnosed with high mercury levels from my doctor, I have been researching the devastating effects of mercury poisoning. I am so thankful for Dr. James E. Hardy for speaking out against one of America's most blatantly deceptive organizations in our country, the American Dental Association. He is very thorough in explaining the incredible and numerous effects of "mercury" fillings on the individual, our society and the environment. Even if you don't have "silver" fillings, this does effect you on a daily basis, you just don't know it. Read this book and others to find out how. Give it to those you love with "silver" fillings, and find a "Mercury Free" dentist to remove them properly!

Mr. Laurel & Mr. Hardy
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (December, 1985)
Author: John McCabe
Average review score:

A comprehensive look at the creative minds of Laurel & Hardy
McCabe knows Laurel & Hardy both well. He spent a lot of time with both of them interviewing and preparing the book. This is not a biography (although McCabe would write biographies of both men), it is a look at what inspired the creative genius behind the funniest comedy team in film history. McCabe studies the backgrounds of both men and how that influenced them both. He looks at how they began and tells what comedians influenced them as they matured. He tells of how they developed their wonderful films and how the process went of developing an idea. McCabe knows this all secondhand from Stan and Ollie, but it still seems fresh.

Music and Sea Tattoos (Tattootime 3)
Published in Paperback by Hardy Marks Pubns (October, 1988)
Author: Donald E. Hardy
Average review score:

more quality from hardy marks publications
do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this volume is entitled "music and sea tattoos" and covers lots of topics!

origins of sea/water tattoos in the pacific (by dan thomé!), sailors and their tattooing tradition (background and motifs), a photograph essay covering different "mermaid" tattoos, another one covering "pirate" tattoos, an interview with the innovating tattoo artist pinky yun (one of the first asian tattoo artists that worked in the states), the traditional "rock of ages" tattoo (historical background, variations on it by different artists), sea and water tattoos in japan, the japanese tattoo revolution amongst the young japanese, punk rock tattoos, tattoos and music. plus profiles on tattoo greats greg irons, leo zulueta, doc webb and bob roberts.

one of the things i like best about tattootime 3 is the number of photographs. there are so many of them! and all of very good quality, showing good quality work.

as in most other "tattootime" issues there are "suggested further reading" listings at the end of each article/chapter. i love those, but dislike them because they tell me about more and more interesting books i should still buy (and study!).
